About This Association

The American Academy of Equine Art, Inc. is dedicated to promoting and sharing representational art that celebrates the horse in sport and life. It also offers hands-on instruction from practicing equine artists with a goal of fostering artistic excellence in the genre. A non-profit organization, AAEA was founded in 1980 by two board members of The Westmoreland Davis Foundation of Morven Park—Dr. Joseph Rogers and Alexander Mackay-Smith. Their goal was to assemble the finest equine artists in the country to exhibit together, share creative ideas, and, eventually, to establish a teaching organization that would be modeled after the Royal Academy in England. The founders tapped world-renowned equine artists Jean Bowman and Else Tuckerman to pull together the inaugural membership—a virtual “Who’s Who” in the equine art world of the day: Jean Bowman, June Harrah, Henry Koehler, William Wallace Nall, Marilyn Newmark, Eve Prime, Princess Marie Louise Moncada, Richard Stone Reeves, Sam Savitt, and Else Tuckerman. Today AAEA remains true to its original mission by hosting multiple yearly exhibits in national locations. These events showcase artists from all over North America are viewed by collectors and dealers alike as a source for the best in contemporary equine art. Many of the Academy's Signature and Juried members are among the most accomplished equine painters and sculptors working today, and they form the teaching core for the academy's popular workshops and clinics. Our Mission We are dedicated to nurturing, educating and promoting all artists who are interested in the classical representation of the equine subject. The AAEA does not exhibit photographs, giclées (inkjet prints), “enhanced giclées” or other mass-produced objects. The AAEA operates as a non-profit, 501(C)3 organization. It does not discriminate on the basis of national or ethnic origin, race, color, creed, gender, age or disability in any of its programs or policies.
